The Beacon is a comprehensive day resource center for people who are experiencing homelessness. Coming in the fall of 2017, it will serve over 100 homeless women, men, and children each day. The Beacon will be open every day from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and will provide guests with a range of services in a safe, welcoming environment.
In a community effort to bring much-needed help to the struggling and homeless people of our city, Catholic Charities partnered with Dane County, United Way, and the City of Madison to establish this multi-service homeless day resource center where many needs can be met under one roof. Right now everyone is working hard to bring together the best people, resources, and infrastructure to do good works for the most vulnerable among us.
Up until May 2nd, we did not have a name for this homeless day resource center. Then, people in Dane County stepped in and helped us find a name. People submitted many excellent name ideas and then voted on the final four picks. Thank you to everyone who participated! We are now, The Beacon.
The Beacon stands as an empowering image. It is the light of hope. It is a guide– which is exactly what the homeless day resource center will be– a resourceful guide to help people address the different obstacles that keep them struggling.
A beacon does not force change; it shows the way and gives people the opportunity to change their own course. At The Beacon people will have opportunities to find a way to a better life. The beacon means that we are not alone– that someone else cared enough to create a signal so that we could be safe. The Beacon is there to serve those who may be on a difficult journey. The message in this symbol fills our hearts and aligns with our mission to serve, to fill a need, and to do well for others.
Thank you to all who come along with us on this transformative journey. Please take the next step with us, and donate to the cause.
